A truly International field including, French, Brazilian, Swede and Italian drivers competing as well as the normally strong Irish contingent. Matt finished a creditable 10th in the championship and moved on to the winter series in a confident mood.
This confidence was well founded when after 5 rounds, Matt ended 6th in the Championship which included both Junior and Premier Slick 50 drivers. For 2002 Matt resigned from the Mick Gardener Racing Team to enable him to embark on a realistic challenge at the Junior crown.
This season started disappoitingly with a gear linkage rod snapping at snetterton in round 1 this was followed by a drive shaft failure in qulifying for round 2 then whilst lying in 4th place in round 3 Matt was bumped off the track and had to restart the race last of 27, a spirted drive took him back into 11th position but it was a uphill struggle.
The highlight of the season came at Formula Fords home circuit the Brands Hatch Indy, where this venue Matt finished 3rd and 2nd in fact he led the second race for 8 of the 14 laps.
The season ended with Matt placed 5th in the Championship, which by his own high standards was a little disapointing for him; however, given the qualiy of this British Championship he perhaps should not be to hard on him self.
